Man harmed in 3-car collision on I-85

DURHAM -- A man was critically harmed in a three-vehicle collision this sunrise on Interstate 85 North nearby the Cole Mill Road exit.

The collision happened prior to long prior to 8 a.m. when a northbound Chevrolet Aveo driven by William Allen Merritt, 60, of Durham clipped the behind of a northbound Nissan Maxima driven by Kathryn Willis, 54, of Mebane. According to investigators, Willis was negligence due to trade and both vehicles were in the far left lane.

The Aveo afterwards skidded in to the behind of a N.C. Department of Transportation bail out truck, that was parked on the left shoulder of the main road so that DOT employees could remove an animal body from the roadway.

Merritt was trapped in his car and was private by Durham firefighters. He was taken to Duke Hospital for diagnosis of vicious injuries, according to police. No one else was injured.

The Aveo was a sum loss and the DOT car postulated complicated damage. The Nissan postulated teenager damage.

The collision slowed trade on Interstate 85 North for some-more than dual hours.

No charges have been filed and the collision stays underneath investigation. Any witnesses to the collision are asked to call Investigator Frey at 560-4935, ext. 29411.
